Hawthorne! : 선장이던 그의 아버지는 불과 4세의 나이에 사망해, 그는 부유한 외가댁 메닝 가에서 유년 시절을 보냈습니다. 그의 아버지 이름은 윌리암 호손(William Hathorne)으로, 그의 본명 또한 나다니엘 호손(Nathaniel Hathorne)입니다. 그러나, 살렘 마녀 재판(Salem witch trials)(1878)을 공권력이 무고한 이들을 핍박한 것이라고 생각한 그는 자신의 가문과 자기 자신을 분리하기 위해 이름에 w를 넣어 나다니엘 호손(Nathaniel Hawthorne)이란 필명으로 활동하였습니다. 보든 칼리지(Bowdoin College)(1821~1825) : 유년 시절부터 영특함을 보였던 호손은 외가 댁의 지원으로 1821년부터 4년간 보든 칼리지(Bowdoin College)에서 수학합니다. 평생 우정을 나눈 동문들과 학교에서 만나 교류하였으며, 훗날 그가 책을 출간하거나 해외에 파견되는 등 인생에 걸쳐 큰 영향을 미쳤습니다. 그 중에는 훗날 14대 대통령에 오른 프랭클린 피어스(Franklin Pierce)도 있었으며, 호손은 대통령 선거 이전에 그를 위한 평전을 집필하였을 정도로 각별한 사이였습니다. 그의 도움으로, 호손은 영국 리버풀의 영사로 임명되었으며, 이를 계기로 유럽을 여행하며 이에 관한 책을 출간하기도 하였습니다. 시인 헨리 워즈워스 롱펠로(Henry Wadsworth Longfellow), 그의 단편집 출간을 물심양면으로 지원한 부호 가문의 호레이쇼 브리지(Horatio Bridge)등도 나다니엘 호손이 보든 칼리지에서 만난 학우들입니다. 두 번 이야기 한 이야기(Twice Told Tales)(1837, 1842) : 호손은 첫 소설 Fanshawe(1828)가 폭망(?!)한 후 장편이 아닌, 단편에 열중하며 40여편의 단편과 소품을 잇달아 발표하였습니다. 그리고, 그 중 가장 완성도가 높다고 생각하는 단편 18편을 골라 1837년 두 번 이야기 한 이야기(Twice Told Tales)란 단편집을 출간하였습니다. 이때 보든 칼리지 동문 호레이쇼 브리지(Horatio Bridge)의 지원을 받았습니다. 기존에 연재한 것을 다시 묶어 두 권짜리 단행본으로 묶어 출간하였다는 뜻에서 ‘두번 이야기 한 이야기’란 제목을 붙였습니다. 1841년에는 21개의 단편을 더해 재출간하였습니다. 14대 미국 대통령 프랭클린 피어스의 전기(1852)를 쓴 이유는?
