The Kansai dialect has become understood throughout Japan through the popularization of TV owarai (comedy) programs and the successful activities of comedians, but for foreigners currently learning Japanese, the Kansai dialect seems to be very difficult to pick up, and can even be called a “second” Japanese language. Attracting attention among such foreigners as the only textbook for learning the Kansai dialect is Introduction to the Kansai (Osaka) Dialect to be Learned by Listening (published by Hituzi Syobo Publishing).
The book consists of 20 units, each of which provides four-frame comic strips that show usage examples, listening comprehension questions to be solved by listening to a CD, and grammar explanations. In the grammar part, the differences between expressions in the Kansai dialect and those in standard Japanese are explained in detail in terms of form and usage. In a column, the characteristics of the Kansai dialect are also touched upon. Furthermore, since the pronunciation of a word with two meanings differs in terms of pitch according to the meaning, the book graphically shows the respective pronunciations with musical notes. This book was written by two experienced female teachers who engage in Japanese language education for foreigners at Osaka YWCA. The impetus for writing this book was a complaint by international students that they could not understand lectures provided in the Kansai dialect at their universities.
