An industry-government-university effort has begun to transmit the classified, organized, and preserved records of digitalized data of cultural properties accumulated in the Kansai region to the world via the internet.

Aiming to attract visitors from overseas by introducing cultural properties—the overwhelming attractiveness of Kansai—via the internet in the Kansai Digital Archive Project, which is being promoted by the Kansai Economic Federation and other groups, this effort is expected to become a powerful means to attract foreign tourists to Kansai with the holding of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics and the World Masters Games 2021.

Called ¡°WABISABI NARA¡±£¨ http://nara-heritage-online.naist.jp/£© , the website contains 3,000 photos, including ¡°Goju-sho-to (miniature five-story pagoda),¡± a national treasure from Kairyuoji Temple (Nara City) and ¡°Shakanyorai-ryuzo (standing statue of Shakyamuni),¡± an important cultural property from Saidaiji Temple (Nara City). The website has been made foreigner-friendly by placing photos with related English information to attract the attention of foreigners and enhance the number of page views from overseas.

Eventually, this website aims to expand its target area to the entire Kansai region, including Osaka and Kyoto, to become a website with hundreds of thousands of photos. Furthermore, it is being considered for the future to develop a system of passing on photo royalties collected from overseas travel companies and publishing companies to the photographers and temples, gain revenue through ad placement, and create new industries that use the digital archive.
