Charles John Huffham Dickens, the master story-teller, was born in Landport, England, February 7, 1812. His father was a clerk in one of the offices of the Navy, and he was one of eight children. ½ºÅ丮ÅÚ·¯ÀÇ ´ë°¡ÀΠCharles John Huffham Dickens´Â 1812³â 2¿ù 7ÀÏ ¿µ±¹ Landport¿¡¼ ž½À´Ï´Ù. ±×ÀÇ ¾Æ¹öÁö´Â Çرº »ç¹«½Ç Áß ÇÑ °÷ÀÇ »ç¹«¿øÀ̾ú°í ±×´Â 8³²¸Å Áß Çϳª¿´½À´Ï´Ù.

He was left to the city streets, or to earn a hard and scanty living in a dirty warehouse, by pasting labels on pots of blacking. All of this wretched experience he has written in David Copperfield, and the sad scenes of the debtors' prison he has put into Pickwick Papers and into Little Dorrit. Even Mrs. Pipchin, of whom he told in Dombey and Son, and Mr. Micawber in David Copperfield, were real people whom he knew in these years of poverty and despair. Dickens's life at this time was so miserable that always afterward he dreaded to speak of it, and never could bear even to walk in the street where the blacking warehouse of his boyhood had stood. ±×´Â µµ½Ã °Å¸®¿¡ ¹æÄ¡µÇ°Å³ª ´õ·¯¿î â°í¿¡¼ °Ë°Ô º¯»öµÈ Ç׾Ƹ®¿¡ ¶óº§À» ºÙ¿© Èûµé°í ºó¾àÇÑ »ýȰÀ» ÇÏ°Ô µÇ¾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ÀÌ ¸ðµç ºñÂüÇÑ °æÇèÀ» David Copperfield¿¡ ½è°í 乫ÀÚ °¨¿ÁÀÇ ½½Ç Àå¸éÀ» Pickwick Papers¿Í Little Dorrit¿¡ ³Ö¾ú½À´Ï´Ù. The work of editorship was very pleasant to Dickens, and scarcely three years after his leaving the Daily News he began the publication of a new magazine which he called Household Words. His aim was to make it cheerful, useful and at the same time cheap, so that the poor could afford to buy it as well as the rich. His own story, Hard Times, first appeared in this, with the earliest work of more than one writer who later became celebrated. Dickens loved to encourage young writers, and would just as quickly accept a good story or poem from an unknown author as from the most famous. ÆíÁý ÀÛ¾÷Àº µðŲ½º¿¡°Ô ¸Å¿ì Áñ°Å¿î ÀÏÀ̾ú°í, µ¥Àϸ® ´º½º¸¦ ¶°³ Áö 3³âÀÌ Ã¤ µÇÁö ¾Ê¾Æ ±×´Â ÇϿ콺Ȧµå ¿öÁî(Household Words)À̶ó´Â »õ·Î¿î ÀâÁöÀÇ ÃâÆÇÀ» ½ÃÀÛÇß½À´Ï´Ù. ±×ÀÇ ¸ñÇ¥´Â ±×°ÍÀ» À¯ÄèÇϰí À¯¿ëÇÏ¸ç µ¿½Ã¿¡ °ª½Î°Ô ¸¸µé¾î °¡³ÇÑ »ç¶÷µéÀÌ ºÎÀÚ¿Í ¸¶Âù°¡Áö·Î ±×°ÍÀ» »ì ¿©À¯°¡ ÀÖ°Ô ÇÏ´Â °ÍÀ̾ú½À´Ï´Ù. ±×ÀÇ ÀÚ½ÅÀÇ À̾߱âÀΠHard Times´Â ³ªÁß¿¡ À¯¸íÇØÁø ÇÑ ¸í ÀÌ»óÀÇ ÀÛ°¡ÀÇ Ãʱâ ÀÛǰ°ú ÇÔ²² óÀ½ µîÀåÇß½À´Ï´Ù. µðŲ½º´Â ÀþÀº ÀÛ°¡µéÀ» °Ý·ÁÇÏ´Â °ÍÀ» ÁÁ¾ÆÇßÀ¸¸ç, °¡Àå À¯¸íÇÑ ÀÛ°¡¸¸Å ¹«¸íÀÇ ÀÛ°¡·ÎºÎÅÍ ÁÁÀº À̾߱⳪ ½Ã¸¦ »¡¸® ¹Þ¾Æµé¿´½À´Ï´Ù.

He never fully recovered consciousness, and next day, June 9, 1870, Charles Dickens breathed his last. Five days later he was laid to rest in Westminster Abbey, where are buried so many of the greatest of England's dead. For days, thousands came to visit the spot, and rich and poor alike looked upon his grave with tears. ±×´Â ÀǽÄÀ» ¿ÏÀüÈ÷ ȸº¹ÇÏÁö ¸øÇß°í ´ÙÀ½³¯ÀΠ1870³â 6¿ù 9ÀÏ Charles Dickens´Â ¸¶Áö¸· ¼ûÀ» °ÅµÎ¾ú½À´Ï´Ù. 5ÀÏ ÈÄ ±×´Â ¿þ½ºÆ®¹Î½ºÅÍ »ç¿ø¿¡ ¾ÈÀåµÇ¾úÀ¸¸ç, ±×°÷¿¡´Â ¿µ±¹ÀÇ °¡Àå À§´ëÇÑ Àü»çµéÀÌ ¸¹ÀÌ ¹¯Çô ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù. ¸çÄ¥ µ¿¾È ¼öõ ¸íÀÌ ±× ÀÚ¸®¸¦ ã¾Ò°í ºÎÀÚ¿Í °¡³ÇÑ ÀÚ ¸ðµÎ ´«¹°·Î ±×ÀÇ ¹«´ýÀ» ¹Ù¶óº¸¾Ò½À´Ï´Ù.
